Whom should I pound ;-) ?

Yes and no. There are market niches, like for example scientific and
engineering market niche. In my fervor I believe BB could be a shining gem,
or at least one of many tools universally known and universally used
in this area. Imagine the following scenario: Cuno goes to CERN and shows
not only technical power of BB architecture, but also several slick
graphical screens created with Robert's graphical tools, plus a few
slick screens created with OpenGL interface, of course with permission
from respective authors. Depending on presentation skills, this could
generate lots of interest and perhaps some orders. Could this happen?
Yes it could, but only if he knows what is "slick" for this particular
audience. Does he know it? I doubt this. Is he serious about his mission
at CERN? I doubt this either. Why do I doubt? Because the company has been
completely silent, and neither he nor anyone else has sent me their slides
for review. Why should they send their slides to me? Because I sort of
know what is "slick" in this particular community, and I am willing
to give my advice. (And I promise not to be rude in my criticism.)
As a last point: how much will it cost? Nothing. Cuno is going there
anyway, so the travel money will be spent regardless. I am not going
to charge any money for my advice. It is free and does not have to be
followed, so there is no risk.
The point is, if OuS were serious about winning new customers for the
product, they would be doing such things left and right. They could
use this community to leverage their sales. They would follow up on
many threads and hints in this mailing list. But they do not. Therefore
I am concluding: most likely, OuS will repeat one more time the same
message that has not been working in the past. This is what I mean
by "missed boat". If they adjust their message to fit the audience,
they will generate interest and eventually also revenue. But if they
repeat the same old mantra, it is not going to work.
I understand your points about Java, C++, and so on, but here my answer
is: while true, this is the old mantra. For as long as we keep repeating
this old stuff, we are stuck. But there must be a new message around.
The question is, what is it, where to find it, and then convey it to whom?
This is an intellectual challenge, not a financing challenge. You can
have all the marketing money in the world, but if you do not know what
to say, the money is not going to help.

You are talking of a different audience from the one I have in mind.
I am talking of science and engineering. Accelerators that should not
stop because of software bugs. Rockets that should not fall down.
Lasers that should not misfire. This kind of things.
> What does that mean? How many millions of bucks would be necessary to
> keep up with that pressure?
I agree with the examples you have given. This particular market niche
may be closed. But there are other market niches out there.
> Its all about money, not ideas.
I completely disagree with that! I believe it is just the opposite.
> OMS is not M$, neither SUN who pays thatJAVA hog and gives it away
> for free.
True. But Sun also started once as a small company. Small things
grow big because of ideas, not because of money. Money is the fuel,
but first there must be fire in place. What I am pounding is the
apparent lack of fire. Our friends are running short on ideas,
not on money. At least this is my opinion.
> PS: For a consolation: BlackBox is evolving slowly, but it is still
> there. We are still using it. Maybe after years we will still be using
> it. And it may grow, slowly, with our help.
Yes, but this help can be either used wisely or not. Look at the
Oberon Day at CERN. Fyodor organised it. This is the help. But he
cannot put a message into Cuno's mouth. What kind of message are we
going to hear? Old stuff that does not work, or some new exciting ideas
that perhaps will? This is the kind of intellectual challenge I have
in mind. It is not about money, it is about ideas. Cuno is going
to have his 1/2 hour there. How is he going to use it? This is my
question.
I am hoping I am not pounding anymore?
Cheers,
Wojtek
