Hello Everyone!
I owe this community an update on the evolutions around BlackBox in the
Russian educational community.
In the Fall of 2002, a systematic effort was started to promulgate
BlackBox as *the* platform for introductory programming courses (senior
high school, junior university levels) -- the so-called Informatika-21
project which I reported about at JMLC'2003. It helped form a substantial
community that keeps growing.
There is a strong tradition of using Pascal in the Russian education
system and Delphi in the industry (and Modula-2 in the aerospace industry;
see A.Koltashev's talk at JMLC'2003), so BB offers a natural upgrade path.
Plus, there is a not insignificant barrier (party remnants of the Iron
curtain, partly an insufficient knowledge of English, etc.) against the
"bad" influences (although those are felt, of course).
An important event within the project was N.Wirth and J.Gutknecht's
journey to Russia in the Fall of 2005, more about it below.
A (growing) number of teachers are teaching with Component Pascal and
BlackBox already.
For instance, a course "Introduction into modern programming" at an elite
theoretical chair of the physics dept. of the (Lomonosov) Moscow State
University. The course targets students starting first year. Those who
attended the first edition (Spring 2001) are already sending back a most
positive feedback (it took them a while to fully appreciate the value of
what they got through that course -- but now I can simply quote their
reports to the new attendees). The course is currently positioned as an
"elite course for elite students".
An important effort is at the city of Orel
(http://blackbox.metasystems.ru) where a young company switched to BB
(quite typically: they started looking at alternatives to Delphi, tried
C++, but then learned about BB through Informatika-21 and decided to go
with it). They are supporting local courses based on BB at a lyceum and
the Orel State University. They support a growing on-line forum
(http://blackbox.metasystems.ru/forum).
They also support versions of BlackBox with a full support for Cyrillic
characters -- and it is likely that a Unicode version of BlackBox will
come out of that community soon enough (Ominc promised their support).
Another example: an entire Vitebsk Region in Belorussia is switching to
BlackBox for high-school courses (12-17 year olds) -- they have a formal
4-year plan to that effect. ("Region" is a major administrative division
inherited from the USSR.)
I should mention a construction-engineering-oriented software company in
Central Asia (Kyrgystan + Kazahstan) working with BB (CPC will soon
receive their AutoCAD-related contribution).
About the Wirth and Gutknecht's journey across Russia:
They visited (not counting the tourist attraction Suzdal etc.)
S-Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhni Novgorod.
Then Wirth (in my company) visited Yekaterinburg in the Urals and
Novosibirsk and Tomsk in Western Siberia.
This second part was funded through participants of the Informatika-21
project in the Tomsk Region (territory-wise, larger than France or
Germany, includes the oil fields of YUKOS and the biggest-in-the-world
Vasyugan wetlands [~1000 sq.km. of impassable bog]).
In S-Petersburg, Wirth was awarded an honorary doctor degree (the last day
of the tour in Moscow was such a mess that the black mantle had to be
brought to Zurich separately -- which I did a week ago).
Along the way, public lectures and "round table discussions" with teachers
were held.
The public lectures were given to packed audiences (e.g. in Moscow, it was
the [famous in Russia] Polytechnical Museum; in Tomsk, the biggest local
theatre).
The "round tables" were typically 2-hr long affairs, with Wirth giving a
lecture about Oberon and IT education, followed by my demo of a version of
BB for Russian schools -- with Russian menus, compiler messages, etc [I
know it should be better integrated with CPC components...].
They took place in S.Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Tomsk and
were attended by a total of ~350 teachers. No less than 200 CD's with
BlackBox and related materials were distributed.
As a direct result, two formerly Pascal-based textbooks are being
converted to Component Pascal, as well as a new book of problems -- all at
the Tomsk University (the oldest in the Urals+Siberia).
The tour was widely covered in the regional media: e.g. in Yekaterinburg
Wirth's lecture at the local university was covered in the news by four TV
channels and in two "analytical" programs. (Niklaus and myself were lucky
to watch one news report while taking "banya" (~sauna) in the house of my
cousin.)
Also take a look at Wirth's Novosibirsk interview to a (the) leading
analytical weekly:
http://www.inr.ac.ru/~info21/texts/2005-10-Expert/final.pdf
The ultimate purpose would be to make BlackBox a unified standard platform
for all introductory programming courses, to be sanctified by the Ministry
of Education. That's still a long shot -- but some recent developments
increase our optimism.
Anyway, the progress is obvious. In the mean time I am giving talks at all
sorts of teachers' conferences -- the next, important one in Novosibirsk
in the end of June, 2006.
I may add that the effort of organizing this whole bloody thing (including
interpreting at all these lectures and "round tables") cost me two month
to recover.
Last comment: a while ago the issue of programming competitions was
discussed on this list, and I had many contacts with the people involved
over the last year or two. Right now it does not seem to be a high-ROI
issue, compared with other useful things that can be done.
And the very last observation:
it looks like the mindshare of Oberon/Component Pascal is rather greater
than its actual penetration in the industry. This means there is a fair
number of experts who are willing to give it a try if an opportunity
presents itself (it's a little like an overheated water). And we know how
unpredictable life is, especially in IT.
Especially that the law "complexity=vulnerability" is as big a law as
energy conservation -- even if it applies to somewhat less rigidly
deterministic systems. I would not be surprised if interesting things
suddently burst to the surface.
That's it for now. Back to neutrino mass and optimal parameter estimation
...
cheers
