There has been a lot of 'chatter' recently in the Borland newsgroups
requesting a 64-bit version of the Delphi compiler. All responses indicate
that this is something Borland have low down on their priority list.
It occurred to me that this might be a way for Blackbox to differentiate
itself and to attract some additional customers. Interest has been shown in
the AMD 64-bit CPU and the Intel 64-bit Extension Technology. I don't know
much about it but I understand that there is less work involved in adapting
a compiler to support these evolutionary designs rather than the new 64-bit
Intel Itanium chip. Preview versions of 64-bit versions of Windows XP are
already available.
We don't currently need the additional addressing range, number-range or
other particular capabilities of a 64-bit system ourselves, but it is very
likely to be of use to the scientific customers that Blackbox currently
serves well.
Comments anyone?
