Thanks,
I was able to get git gui to run.
Now I need to understand what it does since I have
never used a system like this.

Yes, I understand that there are GUI interfaces to git.
There are GUIs to Git in the standard distribution.
Have you tried running "git gui" and "gitk"?
That's what I use 99% of the time.
