Hi Bernhard,
Your remark is correct; but in my case the clients are not going throught a gateway. I need the MAC for clients' identification purposes (their IP addresses may change).
 
I wonder if is there a function for getting the MAC in WinSock.

does it make sense to look for the MAC-address of the other side?

If your client is behind a gateway, you'll get the MAC address of
the gateway ...
