On the other hand, new languages are cropping up all the time with
their own idiosyncrasies, e.g. python, ruby, etc. They routinely get
more press than CP and BB. I do not think that the
language/syntax/uppercase keywords are the root of the hinderance of
CP.

This is the deal-breaker for me. As long as you are programming for
yourself, which is how most special-purpose science applications are
developed, and you use only MSWindows this would not be an issue for
you. But most open source systems are cross platform. Our competition
is not .NET. At least in higher education in the U.S. it is Java, which
rose to prominence with the slogan "Write once, run everywhere."

Yes, but that is BB's greatest strength as well. I don't think it is as
much the document shock as it is the limited selection of GUI widgets
for the forms and the difficulty of making a stand-alone executable.
The last time I had to make an executable for distribution the process
was very convoluted -- making a copy of the development system, then
stripping out the compiler, etc. There should be a one-click facility
to make an executable for distribution.

As a previous poster remarked, we have a "chicken and egg" situation
here in trying to get a critical mass of developers. Helmut Zinn
provides an excellent repository at
http://www.zinnamturm.de/. Perhaps
we need another web presence as well that is more promotional.
