Welcome to the club. I can only add that in our video application we have
two cameras connected to two channels of the same video frame grabber type
NI 1409. If I unplug one of them, then the frame grabber will supply the
same data from both channels. I never went down to hardware to investigate
this. There must be some buffer somewhere that keeps providing the data
even in the case it should not. In order to investigate such problems one
has to be able to follow the data flow all the way from the signal source
to the final application. We only look at the two very ends: the source of
the data (the cable that I can either plug or unplug) and the data in
BlackBox that I am displaying. In between there is a chain of drivers,
buffers, DLLs, and who knows what. We neither have source code nor
understanding of these intermediate levels.

An argument that I often hear in favor of Linux is that these intermediate
layers are accessible in source to a determined user. With Windows the
source code is not accessible, but there may be experts around who
understand all this. Hope someone on this list has such knowledge.
