"Ugliness" and "beauty" are in the eyes of the beholder so are not a good
measure of quality. Poor appearance is often a sign of bad health. The cat
might catch mice but that's not much good if you have to take it to the vet
every week.

Pithy sayings have the danger of leading to excuses for shoddy workmanship:

"If it ain't broke don't fix it" leads to "Don't bother fixing bugs until a
user threatens to sue us".

"No software is bug free" leads to "If it compiles, ship it".

etc. etc.

However, there is one saying that I do like: "Aim for the stars if you want
to reach the moon",
