Good question! This issue poses particular problems for an application
developer like myself. Been there; done that! In my Unix developer days we
had to maintain our system on multiple flavours of Unix: SCO Xenix, SCO
Unix, SunOS, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, ICL something or other and probably a few
others I have forgotten. Each had their own quirks and idiosyncracies. For
many years there was the promise of a 'Unified Unix' but it never happened.
Cross-platform compatibility? What a joke! It was a nightmare for developers
and tech support depts.

Fast forward 20 years and as far as I can see, Linux has inherited this Unix
'feature' as well as all the others. Ubuntu? Debian? Redhat? Fedora? SUSE,
openSUSE? Mandriva? Gentoo? Slackware? Yggdrasil? Knoppix? Devil-Linux?
Sidux? Kanotix? UserOS? etc. etc?

On top of that there are additional desktop environments to support. Gnome?
KDE? Something else?

I can understand how this appeals to some people e.g. those who have more
time on their hands than money in their pockets; those who spend more time
under their car than behind the wheel etc.

The Oberon OS / BlackBox concept of cross-platform capability (i.e. a
complete operating environment hosted on a variety of platforms) is an
interesting one that works excellently when *everything* (or at least
*most*) you want to do can be isolated to the environment with only limited
access to the host's features. Unfortunately, that is often not the case.

Regards,
Chris
