It is not a Controls.Control. It is just a spot that can be dragged around in a view. The view must support HotSpots by keeping a list of spots that are added to it. When the view is restored the view simply iterates over the hot spots asking them to draw themselves in the view's frame. Hot spots don't have frames. They use the frame in which they are embedded. What makes them "hot"? Two things: they are moved by the mouse, and they can call a command when released. The command (name) is installed when the hot spot is created (yes, its a link). The process of moving a spot is done by an action built into the spot which is started when the mouse is first clicked within the spot. The action keeps checking whether the mouse is down and moves the spot to keep it centered with the mouse position. By using an action the view can be restored between the calls to the Do procedure of the action. This gives a very nice and smooth tracking of the hot spot under the cursor. Note, the only message handling that I use for this is the initial test for when the mouse is first down within a HandleCtrlMsg routine. I don't repeat within that routine. Why create a hot spot? I have the need for doing stock market analysis for a client. He has a model that I am testing with actual data but I want to generate some artificial data to analyze how well my algorithm attempting to implement his model is working. I generate the artificial data by using a noisy polynomial. That is, I specify a 4th degree polynomial and then add noise to it. To choose the shape of the polynomial is where the hot spots come in. I have 4 pots that I can move around on the screen and the polynomial will pass through them. Grab, move, release, and regenerate the polynomial. The client has some strict criteria on the 'flatness' of the curve so I want to have the curve be flat in a small region which can be obtained by having two hot spots close to each other and at the same height. So, there is the reason why I wanted a control that I could drag.
