Hi Doug,

the iPad is running iPhone OS and not Mac OS X, so any virtualization software which is available for Mac OS X (e.g. Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, or VirtualBox) does not run on iPhone OS. More than this the iPad uses Apple's "A4" microprocessor, a more or less ARM compatible CPU -- this is quite distinct to Intel's Core CPUs. So, a virtualization is not possible at all -- an emulation is needed.

As far as I know, the only officially supported way to transfer executables ("apps") to an iPhone OS platform device is to use Apple's iTunes software. Every "app" has to be downloaded from Apple's iTunes Store.

Even if an emulator for a x86 PC would be available for iPhone OS, one has to transfer an operating system (e.g. Microsoft Windows XP) via iTunes to the iPad. Apple's official way for this would be that the provider of the "app" (i.e. emulator) would upload some additional software (in this case: an operating system!) to the iTunes Store and customers of the "app" would download it from the store. After that, iTunes would sync the downloads with the iPhone OS platform device.

The iPad is currently only available in the U.S. As far as I know it is possible to connect a bluetooth keyboard to the iPad, so "planned" (;-) text entry should not be a problem.

Best regards,
Peter

Folks,

I thought I would start a discussion about whether or not
one could get BB running on the iPad from Apple Computer.

I have not yet checked whether there are virtualizations available
for the iPad for Windows XP but I vaguely remember that there
maybe.

Other questions are whether the touch screen keyboard is adequate
for text entry (I understand it is not good).

Any other considerations that you might have?
