thanks - that's very useful. I can't hope to undercut Russian and Indian programmers and be able to make a living - the going rate in the UK is probably closer to $100/hour. However, I want to give the site a try with SQL/web work, technical writing and possibly French technical translations. I'll be signing up tonight and will see what's around - thanks again for your help.

It is very web oriented and there is a lot of competition from
programmers in India and Russia, however, by limiting my
criteria I have been able to find a few jobs that suit me and
BlackBox. Total income from about 5 jobs has been
about $1K so I am not getting rich doing this but it does
supplement my retirement income.
If, however, I were to focus on web based design with
SQL and actively pursue each position then I could make
a substantial amount.
I also charge ($30/hour) which is about twice the going rate and
that reduces the number of interviews I am granted.
Its somewhat interesting that oDesk is about 3 miles from me in
Menlo Park, CA but their largest clientele are overseas.
