I beg to disagree: Wirth is a very pragmatic person, a born engineer.

I found all his pronouncement about programming and teaching programming
(e.g. that debuggers should be abolished in the class) to be very sound
from a purely practical viewpoint.
Of course, acquiring the discipline he advocates requires an effort of
training. But it pays off handsomely in a very pragmatic sense.

Just consider how substantially harder it proves (to be?) to port BlackBox
compared with the Classic Oberon.
