Seems it is outing time. No, I'm not a physician. When I started
programming on an old C64, I was ten years old, and since then I've been
addicted to make things work on my computer.

I've not learned programming at school, in fact my teacher back then
told me to be quiet and do something real, since he knew that he could
always come and ask, if he didn't know how to do things.

I've left school 1 year before the final exam, and then I grew into the
job: First I sold PC, then I was the service guy at Escom (maybe some of
you remember that label), and then I was a programmer for the workers'
trade union. Other
software developper jobs followed.

Now and then, the question of "why does CP does so bad on the market" is
asked. I think the reasons are manyfold.

1) OuS does not have a specific vision as to the target group for CP.
2) OuS does not have a clear focus on the strengths of CP
3) OuS does not have provide enough support to get people to use CP.

Currently, as I feel it, CP is used by lovers of Oberon. We are already
addicted to the strengths of Oberon, it's concepts &c, and of all Oberon
products currently availlable under Windows, BB & CP is clearly the most
easy to use. So we
come from the wrong direction. We don't look for the best solution to
our problems, but we look for a way to use our love for the tasks that
need to be done. If it was just for the "best solution approach", nobody
here would bother about
BB&CP, because we wouldn't even know it existed!

IMHO, OuS consists of European University people. They have developed
something, they know it is good, but that's where their knowledge ends.
It takes business people with a vision to make the product something
people really use.

Now let me expand on the points above:

1) OuS does not have a specific vision as to the target group for CP.
When Java started, they didn't have the big marketing money, IIRC, yet
Java is a major language in software development now. Why? Because it
was unexpensive, it worked on many platforms, it was very well
documented, and it had a good reason
to be in business: The internet. Soon a lot of people - not businesses,
but privates, started using Java, and it came to be widely known. After
that, business people could not ignore it. That's a success story.

The same was true for Modula-2 on the Amiga. It was THE language for
game programming. It was used more often than C! Focus on who could use
BB best, and then do everything to make this group happy.

Who is the target group for BB&CP? Universities?

IMHO, BB&CP is first of all perfect for private programming. For small
businesses. For cheap development. Yes, BB&CP can do much more, but
that's where it starts. And it could be perfect for gaming, too.

For this target group, the price charged is much too high.

2) OuS does not have a clear focus on the strengths of CP
What are these strengths?

Readability - Learning curve
Who needs that? Someone who starts programming, or who has a real need
to learn a new language. This is a focus on the private programmer and
the small businesses - or on business people who can be convinced that
forcing BB&CP on their
developers saves them big bucks.

RAD
You can develop applications really fast. But compared to the libraries
availlable for C or Java, you have to do everything by hand! Also, if I
want to do a Database application, I there is no "wizard" to do the
task. Yet, most database
programming is fairly "standard". it could be easily automated in a
wizard, and this should be done.

Portability - if the BB existed on more than one platform!
Just imagine you could develop applications for Linux, Java VM, .Net,
Windows and Apple just from your Windows PC with BB! THAT's a strength!
And even better, if the integration of Java classes, foreign
.Net-objects &c would be automatized.
If I want to use a windows dll in BB, I basically have to do the
interface by hand. Why? This *is* a task that can be automated.

3) OuS does not have provide enough support to get people to use CP.
Documentation is an important thing. Very important. The strength of
rapid learning curve is destroyed because of a lack of documentation. We
all know this, and therefor decided to do something about it.

Providing wizards for common tasks is equally important.

Customer Relation is necessary. What do people need? What do they want?
How can OuS TELL them what they do for them?

Marketing is not necessarily costly, it just depends on how you do it.
And simply put:

What is better, to save on marketing and to charge high prices, which
leads to only a few sales, or to pay on marketing and charge medium
prices and therefor have lots of sales?
