I think you are right. In my opinion BB provides an example of a
potentially marvellous system, which in many places is "almost there" but
not quite. Like you said, some small silly problem may prevent the system
from being useful for many cool tasks. If the silly obstacles were
removed, the system would become more useful, or just easier to use, and
thus more users would not only try it out, but also stick with it.

The feedback back to the vendor is essential, and commercial vendors are
investing effort into getting such feedback and making use of it. Our OuS
friends seem to be ignoring the feedback they are getting. Even if they do
read this mailing list (do they?) there are no results. For example, where
is revision 1.5 coming out? Is it coming out at all? Will it incorporate
anything that users discussed on this mailing list, like improved
documentation or better controls?

It is also ironic to me that this highly modular system has been frozen by
the company. They make the case that the system is extensible. One can add
new components any time, or remove obsolete components for that matter.
Clemens Szyperski wrote a book and Cuno Pfister a sequel book (included as
the BB documenation). They both teach us about the power of extensibility
in the real world. They teach us how a component system is open-ended and
why this is better. Now look at what the company is doing. Do they
actually extend the system? Do they use the power they themselves created?
Not at all. They distribute the system as if it was one executable, to
which they neither add anything nor remove anything. They just froze it
once and for all. Nothing is changing, except for minor bug fixes. Is this
a component system, or is this an old-style executable? Looks like the
latter to me.

Given the flexibility of the component-oriented architecture, the BB of
today should be substantially different from the original BB v 1.4
released some time ago. This could be a constantly evolving and improving
system. Yet, it has been frozen. Looking at this we see a priest who is
only teaching his religion, but not actually using it in practice.

Exactly. This is normal in high-tech. Except in this case.

W.
