Tei:

> The user feedback!

Not the user yet, just your test drive impression at this point.
While the first impression is important, the fact that you are
surprised means you are not a user yet. I wish you will become one.

> 1) ALL RESERVERD WORDS HAS UPPERCASE SUCKS, and Its a pain.

This was a language design decision. All reserved words in C are
lower case, does it suck or not? On the other hand, in Basic or Pascal
you can write "end", "End", or even "enD". Does this suck or not?

I want to say we should not mix our personal taste with more serious
critisisms.

> 2) Help system suck

This was discussed already as a general deficiency of the BB documentation.
While we all seemed to agree the BB documentation is deficient, we have
not come to a clear conclusion how to improve it, other than writing
our own books. It is hard to define why the OuS documentation style feels
not very appealing, though we seem to agree it feels that way. Some problems
are apparent, though. BB docu has many gaps. The gaps become apparent
once you start developing some demanding application. Then lack of some
pieces of information becomes sort of obvious.

Could this be remedied? Yes, it could, by providing feedback to the company,
if the company would take such feedback and react to it. They do not.
The problem is thus unsolvable. (Any problem becomes unsolvable if the
recipient turns off his speakerphone.)

> 3) Where is my "Build" icon?

You are coming from another world. There is no Build button. This system
has a different philosophy.

> 4) Where is my syntax coloring?

Ditto. The BB text editor has different philosophy from what you expect.
It has its merits, though. Some of its merits are pretty appealing.

On the other hand, there is a Beautifier that can clean up the appearance
of the code. I never used it, so I do not know if it can color the
syntax, but preasumably this can be added to the Beautifier code to make
it color the reserved words. I am not sure I would want to do it, but
that's my personal taste.

> 5) Trap windows. Cool, but.. Where all these misecelaneous info come
> from? a hidden fake SO? what? Whats about information hiddin here?

Not sure I understand what you mean. Cool is not the right word here.
This is a debugger. Debuggers are not meant to look cool. Debuggers
are meant to never be needed, and if they are needed, they should
help find the bug quickly and then disappear. BB debugger is pretty
useful, at least in my experience.

> 6) Default font is not monospace. (easy to fix one!)

This is again a personal preference.

> 7) Where is the info about system command line compiling?

One of many things that are possible under BB, but sort of hidden
in the docu. I learned such things from more experienced users,
mostly from Robert Campbell. His "install scripts" just work.
If I ever want to do something similar, I copy from him.

> This editor sux, I want to use my own (SciTE) editor.

You have your preference, but then someone else will say SciTE sucks,
and the argument will start anew. Keep in mind, this editor is not
just an editor. It is integrated deep into the system. If you embrace
the system, learning this editor is but a small price to pay. The strength
and the weaknesses of this system are not in the editor. Both the strength
and the weakness are hidden much deeper.

> 8) Include a server software or something network oriented?

Here you hit the nail. As Rene said, this system is marvellous as long
as you stay within. Try to interface with some other software and
you are hitting the wall. In principle, this should not be a problem,
but given lack of good documentation, examples, or tutorials, you need
to be a proficient expert to know how to achieve the goal despite
lack of information. You need to get this info from somewhere else.

This is not a fundamental limitation, it is just a logistic limitation.
It is like a car without an ignition key. If the owner decides not to
give the key, it is hard to move the car, despite owner's declarations
"this is a magnificent car".

I guess we are all begging the owner "give us the keys", but the owner
remains silent. This is a very practical problem of how to get this thing
moving in the direction that the users need? Sort of simple: please give
us the keys. The keys, please.

> 9) Links to internet repository or whatever? CPAN?

Helmut's website is not bad. There is lots of good stuff there.

> 10) Italic fonts escape from "visible" area in some docs, like license.
> You can read "no comercia purposes".

No problem on my screen.

> 11) Internal docs show without the info about paths or something.

Is this a problem? Why?

> cool BETA

Actually, I can add a few points of my own. For example, try the Tut menu.
Now, *this* is a puzzle. They want to teach us something, but what?
Here the solution is simple: get rid of it. Not worth the time
to even pull it down. Perhaps it was meant as a joke. But Tut is
but a small problem in BlackBox.

What is the biggest problem in my opinion? I sort of feel the biggest
problem is that nobody seems to be at the receiving end of this whole
discussion in the positive sense. We once officially heard that OuS
is a consulting company, and they do not intend to invest in the tool
beyond what we see. However, the user community does not care about
their consulting jobs. We only care to see a better tool that *we*
can use. Since this is a commercial tool, and not a cheap one for that
matter, the kind of policy the company now has is deeply disappointing.
We further imply there is a potential lucrative market for this product.
The Oberon Day at CERN was organised on that premise. Is the company
going to say they do not care about CERN, Brookhaven, Fermilab, and bunch
of other places that are feeding hundreds of companies their size?

The guys are not likely to get many consulting jobs at CERN due to lack
of knowledge of the folklore at this point, though they may learn after
a while. However, they can sell hundreds of BB copies, albeit probably
not for $1,500 a pop. But if they want to sell, they better listen to
the customers. There are certain things they have to do and some others
they should not do, and we are trying to explain both. I wonder if the
message is getting through.

Cheers,

W.
