OLE - with microsoft equation editor

I have recently tried embedding equations into BlackBox documents.
I use Windows NT and the equation editor from microsoft office 97.
When I try to edit the equations in-place using the OLE mechanism
it is very unreliable and frequently crashes.

I was wondering if anyone else had tried anything similar, and if
they had found it reliable or not.
