hmm, although I also have problems understanding domains
completely, I'll try to answer, but ask others to comment or correct

I think domains are strongly linked to compound
documents and their structure (internal/ecternal ?).

I'm not shure if domains are also linked to "active" contents,
but most of them are unthinkable without compound documents.

the joining (the new concept introduced with 1.4) of domains has something to
do with messages travelling from the OS down a hierarchy (probably nested) of
components in a compound document.
